This video provides a hands-on exploration of customizing graphics for ConnectCAD devices within Vectorworks. Participants will learn to edit and refine device visuals—ranging from basic rectangle attributes to detailed socket and label symbols—to create professional, tailored schematic representations. Through guided lessons, students will examine how device components use class attributes and symbols, practice direct symbol editing, insert custom images, and design bespoke device labels. By the end of this section, learners will have the skills to craft unique and visually consistent device graphics that enhance both function and clarity in their ConnectCAD documentation.
In this exercise, you’ll create a custom ConnectCAD device designed to reinforce your understanding of device customization, socket placement, and class attribute management. The goal is to build a visually distinctive hexagonal network device that includes multiple LAN ports and a power connection, using basic 2D geometry and ConnectCAD’s styling tools. You may create your own entirely from scratch, or you can follow the step-by-step guide to recreate the device in the image.
This course section focuses on the art and technique of customizing graphics for 3D equipment items in ConnectCAD. Participants will learn how to modify symbol geometry, control labeling and text, and build custom 3D models from scratch or manufacturer files. Through practical exercises, learners will explore adding visual elements such as images and textures, adjusting rack component parameters, and incorporating detailed custom geometry to enhance realism and design precision. By the end of the section, students will be equipped to create fully customized 3D equipment symbols that elevate the visual and functional quality of their ConnectCAD projects.
In this exercise, you will create a 3D equipment rack, adjust its appearance using class attributes, and then build two versions of custom rack equipment: one using a flat image-mapped face and another using a Renderworks texture applied to the front surface. You will place both custom pieces into the rack, add internal rack rails with simple extrudes, and finish by drawing a fan opening on the top of the rack to complete the model.
This section dives into how to customize and manage data across a ConnectCAD project to create smarter, more informative documentation. Learners will discover how to design and apply custom records, use the Data Manager to control object data efficiently, and enhance device labels with dynamic text and linked parameters. The course also examines advanced data handling methods such as creating custom data tags, generating tailored reports, and leveraging tools like the ConnectCAD Status Window, “Check Drawing” command, and Share feature. By the end, participants will be able to capture, manage, and present data in meaningful ways that improve accuracy and collaboration within their ConnectCAD workflow.
In this exercise, you will build a simple ConnectCAD schematic and use custom data to make the drawing more informative. The goal is to create a custom record format with several user-defined fields, attach that record to devices in the drawing, and then display the information in three ways: a custom report, data tags placed in the drawing, and a data visualization that highlights selected values.

This exam evaluates participants knowledge of ConnectCAD tools, commands, and concepts. To prepare for this exam, it is recommended that participants first complete the ConnectCAD Advanced Certification class. After successfully completing this exam with a score of 80% or higher, participants will earn the ConnectCAD Advanced Certification. The certification will be valid for 3 years.
