With a request of little-to-no technical equipment in sight and the production taking place in a small venue, transferring Daniel Fish’s version of the classic musical Oklahoma! from Broadway to the West End was never going to be easy.
Set designer Grace Laubacher led a design team to bring the project to life with 3D modeling and ProjectSharing in Vectorworks.
Join Laubacher, Fridthjofur Thorsteinsson (associate lighting designer,) Drew Levy (sound designer,) and Josh Thorson (video designer) for a webinar on how Vectorworks helped create one of the smoothest collaborations the team has ever been through.

BIM authoring software, such as Vectorworks®, allows architects and other professionals within the AEC industry to create complex, data-rich 3D models for the purpose of exploring and documenting a design. This continually growing technology also allows for new ways of sharing information among all consultants on a project. As a result, it is essential to establish an agreed-upon method and file format for information exchange between the different disciplines on a team who are each utilizing different software. In some cases, a traditional 2D line drawing exchange, such as a PDF or DWG, is needed to support those who have not entered the 3D realm. Other times, exchange of only geometry in the form of a 3D DWG may be needed for clash detection and as a “background” for referencing. However, if the file exchange needs to support Building Information Models and the sharing of geometry and data, then the IFC file format should be strongly considered.

BIM has primarily been considered for large project documentation efficiency, while smaller projects and their design processes are often neglected. This session’s goal is to show architects and allied design professionals how the inherently data-rich nature of BIM can serve smaller and design-oriented projects. BIM can refine your building design process and help you use materials more sustainably.
Through a series of technical vignettes, participants will see BIM in a new light: far more than an improved documentation and sharing environment reserved for large projects, BIM can improve both the efficiency of the design process and the efficiency of the design itself.

In Vectorworks 2019, we are introducing a new diagnostics functionality to Project Sharing. Overtime, changes in a Project Sharing document are saved through metadata. In the case that this metadata becomes excessive, it may adversely affect Project Sharing performance. The new diagnostics functionality allows this metadata to be deleted if such a condition is detected.

When it comes to Building Information Modeling (BIM), one of the biggest benefits is greater collaboration with your project consultants. But what does this mean for project teams that use different software programs? And, more importantly, how can you take advantage of this improved collaboration? In this presentation, you'll learn how organizations can adopt standards based on the Open BIM initiative to achieve streamlined workflows, regardless of the software that is being used. Attendees will discover file-sharing methods such as the Reference Model workflow, as well as how ti integrate these methods with the BIM manager role. You'll also learn from a case study that proves the concept of Open BIM interoperability.

Sharing your BIM with your consultants has many advantages including model checking and coordination. In the end, architects and engineers still have contractual obligations to produce a legal set of documents pertaining to a project being designed. In this training, you will learn how you can use various files from your consultants and put them to use with your architectural model to provide a fully integrated and coordinated set of drawings.
